How to get rid of smelly feet

Having smelly feet is a common medical condition often caused by a build-up of sweat. For example, in some shoes and socks the amount of sweat increases and is prevented from evaporating. This sweat build-up results in bacteria growth on the skin which ultimately causes bad odor.

Hot weather, exercise, being overweight and hormonal changes may increase the amount of sweat. In some cases, smelly feet are due to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Having smelly feet could be uncomfortable and embarrassing but there are ways to both treat and prevent it.

How to stop smelly feet and prevention

Smelly feet can usually be improved by good hygiene, but there are also some other ways to stop the bad smell.

  • Keep your feet clean and dry. Wash your feet frequently, including in between the toes, with a mild soap and running water. Dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes where a wet environment can cause bacteria to grow.
  • Change your socks at least once a day. You should change them more often if you have been exercising or in a hot environment or if your feet have become sweaty due to any other cause. Preferably use moisture-wicking socks made from natural fibers such as Bamboo.
  • Wear different shoes every other day. Keep several pair of shoes that you can alternate wearing every other day. This allows the shoes to dry out before use. Furthermore, wear open-toed sandals in summer when it is warm weather.
  • Use well-fitting shoes in a material that breathes. Use shoes that are not too tight and that has a material that breathes (which will allow the sweat to evaporate).
  • Keep your toenails short
  • Use Salvequick’s Foot Rescue Cream.
