Summer brings warmth and sun, refreshing dips, and long days in sandals. But with bare knees and barefoot walks come small accidents: scrapes, abrasions, and sometimes missteps on gravel paths. How do you best care for wounds in summer – especially if you want to keep spending time outdoors and cool off with a swim? We clarify how to best care for wounds in water, what should be included in a first aid kit for your holiday, and when it’s time to seek medical care.
As temperatures rise and we spend more time outdoors, the risk of scrapes and cuts increases. It is important to clean wounds thoroughly and quickly, as dirty wounds are more prone to infection – especially in heat and humidity. The risk of infection rises during warm summer days, making it crucial to give small wounds extra care to heal quickly and safely.
The short answer: yes, but with the right protection. The longer answer: it depends on the type of wound and the type of water you plan to swim in. Still waters, like lakes and ponds, often contain more bacteria than the sea or pools, which can increase the risk of wound infection. Therefore, you should avoid swimming with open wounds in these environments. If the wound is small, clean, and well covered, swimming in the sea or chlorinated pools is usually fine.
Tip: Always use a waterproof plaster – for example, Salvequick Aqua Block or Salvequick Natural Healing – to protect the wound when swimming. It reduces the risk of infection and keeps the wound protected.
To further reduce the risk of serious wound infections like “swimmer’s fever” (caused by Vibrio bacteria in warm and moist waters), it is important to avoid swimming with open wounds in warm water and always wash and disinfect the skin immediately after swimming. If you experience symptoms such as redness, swelling, or pain after swimming – seek medical care promptly by contacting your healthcare center.
A well-packed first aid kit on vacation makes a big difference – especially when small accidents happen far from the nearest pharmacy. Here are our tips for what to include in your summer wound care bag:
Tip: Adjust your kit depending on the activity – for hiking, to manage scrapes or blisters from shoes, or for the beach vacation to care for wounds in summer heat and water, such as cuts from shells or rocks.
Wounds that become red, pus-filled, swollen, or increasingly painful may be infected. In such cases, you should contact healthcare. Read more about infected wounds here.
Salvequick Natural Healing wound care products prevent infections. They contain medical honey that promotes and stimulates wound healing and reduces the risk of scarring. Read more about the benefits of medical honey here.
